What is your company policy about using car seats/baby carriers while transporting kids to the hospital?
I know this seems like a logical decision and you would use a car seat or carrier but I have seen on many different occasions that the provider brings in the child on the mother's lap on the stretcher. Now I don't need to stress how unsafe this is. If you need to stop quick, get into an accident or heaven for bid roll the rig that kid is going to be a projectile flying across the rig.
With out saying an agency or name I saw tonight someone have a child on the mother's lap on the stretcher, dad up front and the providers partner load the carrier into the side door of the rig. And before you think it was an emergency call going to the hospital it wasn't. This had to be a tx to another facility cause it happened at a hospital.

Also so everyone knows St. Luke's has a portable car seat that straps onto the stretcher. It is made by Ferno. If the parents don't have a car seat and the child is being tx somewhere else they will allow you to use it. I even called them once and used it for a tx out of St. Elizabeth's. Here is a link to it for reference www.fernoems.com/en/search-results/pedi-mate.aspx

Car Seats are a great tool children fell comfortable in them and you don't have to move them a lot.

Car seats are the best Protection for children. It also brings comfort for them in a way of feeling safe in an un known area like the back of an amblunace with unknown people. There are familiar with there seat that might bring a little bit of comfort for them.

During an emergency, especially that of an infant or child, usually the last thing we are thinking of is getting the car seat/infant seat put into place for transport seeing as our primary concern is caring for that pt. I personally feel every ambulance should be equipped with a 3 in 1 type car seat (where the straps can quickly and easily adjusted for height) and will accommodate infant through small child in the event we do need to transport the child. I have been on calls whereas the parent didn't even have a car seat for the child, straps were missing or not appropriately adjusted (loose) or they only had one vehicle that had the car seat in it and the other parent was using that vehicle. The difficult part in all of this is finding a place to store one of these on an ambulance which is already limited on space as it is. I think this is something that should be looked further into and more concentration and consideration should be used when purchasing ambulances and determining compartment size/function/storage.

I agree that car seats are important and should be used at all times. There also in lies the big question of who assumes liability in the event that something was to happen during the transport. Is the agency responsible, the driver, the provider or all 3. Do you delay transport if you do not have the proper equipment. I agree that all ambulance should be equipped with car seats to not only keep the pt safe, but also keep the provider's safe.

Our policy is to grab the car seat from the home or the car and strap the child into the captain's chair as it's the safest place on the ambulance. We don't carry a car seat on the rig, but I think that would be a great addition to the department.

I think any child that meets the requirements of having to be in a car seat should be in one. I would not be ok with my children not properly secured while being transported. I think that a lot of parents may oversee this because there mind is focused on the issue the child is being transported for.
